Photographer Joe A.Hinojos of Sierra Madre passed away Thursday morning, two weeks shy of his 102nd birthday.

He was a sergeant in the army in WWII and was assigned to the Fort Ord Panorama Newspaper where he took many pictures of army life, including one picture that became a recruiting poster for the American Legion.  He also took the pictures documenting the exhumation of now Saint Junipero Serra.

He lived in Sierra Madre for over 50 years where he made his living as a professional photographer, including taking regular retreat photographs at the Mater Dolorosa Retreat House.  His photographs over the decades of events in Sierra Madre have been donated and have been a significant contribution to the Sierra Madre Historical Society.

He moved to Leona Valley in 1972, but he stayed in contact with many people and still visited friends in Sierra Madre for many years.

He is survived by his wife Patricia, his son Mark, his daughter Benita, her husband Robert and their three children, Cheyenne, Clint and Dallas, and three nephews.
